Abstract: Against the background of a still missing, generally applicable, and reliable definition of what we call treatment by natural remedies (naturopathy), wherein the two fundamentals of medical art - nature and treatment -would have to lead to a conclusion, the roots and the development of natural treatments are discussed by giving historic examples from Antiquity to Enlightenment. By using heuristic ideals it is tried to find out the enduring mission of natural medical art and to show prospects for the theoretical and practical application of a treatment by natural remedies.
