Peculiarities of osteoporosis with ankylosing spondylitis (Bechterew's disease) and therapeutic consequences |
Journal/Book: Physikalische Medizin Rehabilitationsmedizin Kurortmedizin. 1992; 2/4: 122-126.
Abstract: The pathology of early and late-stage osteoporosis in ankylosing spondylitis is explained. Results of osteodensitometry are presented. Possible consequences are compressive or biconcave fractures and subsequently neurological complications. A careful preoperative radiological examination mainly of the cervical spine and special procedures of general anaesthesia are urgently recommended. Generally the significance of a regularly performed physiotherapy in ankylosing spondylitis to protect from increasing osteoporosis may be underestimated.
