Abstract: Many primary or secondary causes can disturb intestinal flora.The antagonistic (bacteriostatic-antibacterial) effect of the Escherichia Coli strain Nissle 1917, SK 22 (Mutaflor®) is successfully utilized in gastrointestinal diseases caused or aggravated by altered bacterial flora.The microbiological relations and proof of therapeutic efficacy is shown in vitro and clinical investigation.This microbiological therapy concept represents an unprecedented mode of treatment in certain suitable gastrointestinal diseases.
