Abstract: This study examined the prominence of the music therapy profession among music professions. The subjects' awareness of the music therapy field in general also was investigated. A total of 1176 subjects responded to the survey. The subjects were chosen from four categories: music majors, nonmusic majors, adult nonstudents, and high school students. An interviewer read three questions to each individual. Music therapy ranked fifth out of the 39 music professions mentioned by the subjects. It was preceded by performer, teacher, director/conductor, and composer. College music majors had the highest percentage of awareness of music therapy (97%, n=269), followed by adult nonstudents (64%, n=326), college nonmusic majors (62%, n=258, and finally high school students (37%, n=323).
