Does a Lowering of the Cholesterol-level Reduce all Causes of Death? |
Journal/Book: Natur- und Ganzheitsmedizin Wissenschaft und Praxis. 1991; 4/3: 69-70.
Abstract: The partly contradictory research results an the effects of a lipid-lowering diet and medication an coronary and overall mortality and morbidity can be explained with the differences in aims and time-schedules of the studies. The results depend an the formulation of the ends of the studies and the criteria of success. Most intervention studies an the treatment of hypercholesteraemia were maximally carried through for four years only. This period of time is too short to achieve substantial effects in respect to coronary mortality. So far there has only been one long-term study over 16 years. It showed a lowering of the coronary mortality as well as of the overall mortality for the treatment with niacin.
