Critical Statements an the Present Pharmacological Regimen of Osteoporosis

Abstract: Nowadays it can be considered certain that an estrogen therapy greatly decreases the fracture risk of women. The duration of treatment, however, has to exceed the time of the postmenopausal complaints considerably. Here the problem is that only 20 to 30 percent of women are threatened by a particular osteoporosis risk. Most probably the nutritional intake of calcium plays an important role. If a decreased bone-density with fractures is diagnosed, a therapy with fluorides, calcium, vitamin D, and calcitonin, the efficiency of which has been proven in several studies, has to be taken into consideration. The range of medicaments available will in future be extended by diphosphonates, anabolic preparations, and new estrogen preparations. The main aim of the therapy is an improvement and maintenance of the quality of life.
