Abstract: In all multicellular, oxidizing living systems radical reactions which can basically change, damage, or destroy all biological structures may proceed in all compartments. Through decomposition of the peroxide, lipid peroxidation leads to new radical-chain reactions with multiple pathological consequences for the cell membranes, which can cause premature aging, gene regulation disturbances, and cancer. One important part of the enzyme protection system of the cell membranes against free radicals is given by the selenium-dependent glutathione peroxidases. Additionally there are the phospholipase A2, the microsome G-SH transferease, and the cytosolic G-SH transferase.
