Expression and expansion in adolescence: The significance of creative arts therapy. Special Issue: The creative arts therapies with adolescents |
Journal/Book: Arts in Psychotherapy. 1990; 17: 101-107.
Abstract: Reexamines adolescent explosion and its relationship to creative expression. The significant healing properties of the arts during adolescence may lie not only in the outlet for expression they provide, but in the way they enable containment and lead to expansion. The concepts of explosion, expression, containment, and expansion are further explored as central to the understanding of creative arts therapy with adolescents. An example of the movement from expression to expansion is given in a description of adolescents who created a rock video during short-term psychiatric hospitalization.
