Domestic violence: Assessments and treatments employed by music therapists

Abstract: Surveyed 80 music therapists identified as working with clients involved in domestic violence to determine assessment and treatment techniques used with battering men, battered women, and the children of battered women. Nonmusic and music behaviors that music therapists most commonly assessed and the music activities or conditions that they used in the assessments were reported for functional psychiatric assessment areas of behavior, affect, sensory, imagery, cognitive, interpersonal, drugs, physical well-being, and speech. These categories are derived from the music therapy literature, developmental checklists of music behavior, and music curricula for exceptional children. ABSTRACT 2: This study surveyed all music therapists identified as working with clients involved in domestic violence to determine assessment and treatment techniques employed with battering men, battered women, and the children of battered women. Nonmusic behaviors music therapists most commonly assessed and the music activities or conditions they emplyed to assess or treat such behavior were reported for the functional assessment areas of behavior, affect, sensory, imagery, cognitive, interpersonal, drugs, physical well being, and speech. Music behaviors music therapists most commonly assessed, with the conditions they employed to assess such behavior, were reported for eight categories of music behavior derived from the music therapy literature, developmental checklists of music behavior, and music curricula for exceptional children.
