Abstract: Khella fruits have been used for centuries in Egyptian folkmedicine in the treatment of urolithiasis. Following a short description of the plant, the main components of the Khella fruits, a drug monographed in the German Pharmacopoea (DAB 9 - Ammeos visnagae fructus) are reported. Phytochemical and morphological differences between fruits of Ammi visnaga and Ammi majus, a widespread adulteration of the Khella fruits, are mentioned. Finally, some pharmacological and clinical data are presented, which confirm the therapeutic effect of this drug as a spasmolytic agent in the therapy of asthma, angina pectoris and urolithiasis.
