Ammi visnaga (L.) Lamarck -The Khella plant |
Author(s):
Abstract: Khella fruits have been used for centuries in Egyptian folkmedicine in the treatment of urolithiasis. Following a short description of the plant, the main components of the Khella fruits, a drug monographed in the German Pharrnacopoea (DAB 9 Ammeos visnagae fructus) are reported. Phytochemical and morphological differences between fruits of Ammi visnaga and Ammi majus, a widespread adulteration of the Khella fruits, are mentioned. Finally, some pharmacological and clinical data are presented, which confirm the therapeutic effect of this drug as spasmolytic agent in the therapy of asthma, angina pectoris and urolithiasis.
