Stellenwert der Phytopharmaka in der Therapie von Lebererkrankungen

Abstract: Among about 100 pharmaceutical specialities for liver therapy in the "Rote Liste 1990" (German pharmaceutical index) are listed 48 drugs of plant origin. In half of these preparations the 4 most often used compounds are fro milk-thistle, celandine, artichoke and dandelion.Botanical, pharmacological and therapeutical aspects are discussed. Where pharmacological and clinical aspects are concerned the widest experience is available on silymarin which is used in the therapy of toxic liver damage, and for supportive treatment in cases of chronic inflammatory liver disease and hepatic cirrhosis as a nono-phytotherapeutic agent.The new perspective of treating liver cirrhosis with colchicine is mentioned.
