Strukturiete Kopfschmerztherapie - Aufgaben und Grenzen einer Akupunkturbehandlung

Abstract: In the last years the acupuncture is increasingly used as supplementary procedure of non-medicinal therpy in the treatment of chronic headache. A final and satisfying explanation f the effect of the acupuncture is not yet available. The ideas of the traditional Chinese medicine play a rather inferior role. Spinal and supraspinal mechanisms and the release of endogenous opioids and neurotransimtters as well as psychical influences are discussed as possible neurophysiological explanation for the inhibition of pain. From the every day´s practice for ambulatory treatment of pain it is reported on the frequency of the chronic headache syndrome. Symptomatic types of headache can be excluded by a careful differential diagnosis of the pain syndrome. The therapy of the idiopathic headache syndrome is increasingly by means of a graded treatment. Within the frame of this structured pain therapy also the acupuncutre is applied. The acupuncture therapy is indicated if any causal therapy of the headache syndrome is not possible and/ or if a reduction of analgetics shall be achieved. Under such conditions the acupuncture can be used as supplementary non-medicinal therapy in case of chronic headache. In the hand of a trained physician the acupuncture is a therapeutic procedure for the treatment of pain which is almost free of side-effects.
