Well-known and actual aspects an chemistry and pharmacology of Urtica preparations

Abstract: The low molecular compounds hitherto isolated from Urtica roots (sterines, phenylpropanes) cannot or only in part explain the well documented efficiency of Urtica preparations an the treatment of prostata hyperplasia of grade I and II. Meanwhile a lectin mixture (MG = 8500 D) and five chemically defined neutral and acidic polysaccharides (MG = 15000-200000 D) have been isolated by us from Urtica roots. These polymers show a series of remarkable immunological activities (T-lymphozyte stimulation, macrophage induced liberation of TNF a, influence an the complement cascades) might explain in part the antiphlogistic and antineoplastic activity of Urtica extracts.
