Music therapy guidelines for developmentally disabled children. National Association for Music Therapy California Symposium on Clinical Practices (1987, Costa Mesa, California)

Abstract: Summarizes an approach to music therapy (MT) provided at a center serving moderately to profoundly mentally retarded children, many of whom are dually diagnosed with developmental disorders. As a member of an interdisciplinary team, the music therapist provides assessments, attends the treatment planning conference, and helps determine the primary needs that become the emphasis for programming. The use of music in the development of perceptual, sensorimotor, social, and communication skill areas is highlighted. In programming, it is essential to pinpoint social and academic expectations, issue reinforcements in accordance with expectations, and set a predictable schedule. ABSTRACT 2: A summary of the approach to music therapy in the habilitation of developmentally disabled children at the Georgia Retardation Center, Athens, is presented. PArticularly highlighted and outlined is the use of music in the development of sensorimotor skills, perceptual skills, communication skills, and socialization.
