Abstract: Discusses, from a psychoanalytic viewpoint, the reasons why a combination of music and painting in art therapy with psychotic patients is preferable to either music or painting alone. Psychotic patients are locked in at a psychic level where aesthetic experiences appear interchangeable, unstructured, and without sublimational values. Simultaneous painting and music therapy provides patients with a multisensory immersion, enabling them to use integrative mechanisms and experience libidinal transformation based on sublimational sexuality. The psychotherapist plays a major role in structuring the setting and programming the artistic experiences to successfully accomplish these goals. (English abstract)
