Mind and Medicine: The Role of Imagery in Healing |
Journal/Book: The Journal of the American Society for Psychical Research. 1989; 83: 93-100.
Abstract: This article reviews a program of research that focused upon the relationship between the mind and health. Inparticualr, imagery was discussed as an ancient medical tool that is currently undergoing a revival as a modality for diagnosis and treatment. Psychological components of disease were briefly discussed, and studies showing a correlation between mental and physical factors were summarized. The newest dimension in research was presented as the demonstration of mental control over specific immune system activities. The conclusions from the numerous studies were that the mind contributes the greatest variance to the course of health and that to ignore the role of mental factors in the treatment of disease is inhumane and perhaps even unethical.
