Abstract: Phenobarbital (PB) is a enzymatic inducer (EI) classically used in animal experiments. Administred i.p. during 4 days at 80 mg/kg/day, it increases the metabolism of many drugs, including barbiturates by activation of the hepatic microsomial system. This effect is evidenced by 1) an increase of the LD50 of PB; 2) a clear rise of some hepatic enzymes as g-glutamyl-transpeptidase (GGT) ; 3) a decrease of sleep duration induced by barbituric anzsthetic such as B at 9CH was not analyzed on this parameter. Due to the small number of mice, it was not possible to analyze histological data.
