Abstract: The purpose of this study was to investigate combining music therapy and art therapy for groups of inpatients and outpatients of a psychiatric hospital. It was hypothesized that using these expressive media as therapy would increase emotional exploration and creativity. Aims were: 1) To evaluate combining art and music therapy to increase emotional exploration and creativity. 2) To compare the responses of an open group of patients of a psychiatric hospital, with the responses of a closed group of psychiatric outpatients in the community. Activities included imagery and music, drawing, discussing feelings, and improvisation. A questionnaire was administered at the conclusion of sessions, indicating that the program was usually marked as "good" to "very good". The study supports the combination of art and music therapy to increase emotional exploration and creativity.
