Abstract: Presents a Freudian interpretation of Idomeneus in the psychosocial context of its composition. Mozart combined unconscious avoidance of his rampant oedipal conflicts with the incandescent musical innovations that represent the opposite side of these conflicts. The author traces the events in Mozart's life when he symbolically rejected his domineering father simultaneously with the actual rejection of another overpowering father figure, his employer. The plot of Idomeneus involves a king confronted with the need to sacrifice his son to Neptune as the consequence of a foolish vow. Mozart unconsciously removed from the plot the mutually directed death wishes of father and son, giving them musical expression instead.
