Abstract: Because of the many controversies prevalent in the field of alcohol rehabilitation, it is difficult for music therapists to begin working with this population. In addition, there is a distinct lack of research on addictions in the music therapy literature identifying effective strategies to base clinical procedures upon. This article is the first of a two-part review of music therapy services for individuals with alcoholism. The intent of these two articles is to provide a state-of-the-art introduction to the field of alcohol rehabilitation. Part 1-An overview of the addiction, focuses on the current theoretical and empirical research contained in the alcoholism literature. Part 2-Treatment services, outlines suggested music therapy services. Contained in this first article are selected topics which include a description of the clinical syndrome, typologies, and current standards for diagnosis. A review of available literature focuses on genetic, psychological and environmental studies, the major themes of current research.
