Abstract: Describes a method for selecting expressive therapy treatment, employing an assessment of client verbalization, action, fantasy, and content skills to make the selection. Assessment results frequently show a close relationship between play, creativity, and action via the symbolism chosen. Procedures include exercises in artwork, music, drama, and mime. Case examples illustrate how the expressive assessment yields data on the client's motivation to participate in the activity, use of creativity while holding on to reality, structural needs for completing the activity, and sublimation of affect through performing the activity. ABSTRACT 2: This paper describes Rett Syndrome, a severe developmental disability found in females. It presents specific diagnostic criteria including loss of purposeful hand use, behavioral regression, appearance of steretypical hand movements, and gross motor incoordination. The four stages of the disease are outlined along with the characteristics typical of each one. Two case studies og music therapy interventions, including sample music therapy goals and objectives, are presented. Examples of therapeutic strategies are also provided.
