Factors affecting the careers of women performing artists with disabilities |
Journal/Book: Music Therapy Perspectives. 1988; Silver Spring, Maryland, USA. National Association for Music Therapy. journal article.
Abstract: A small sample (N=12) of women performing artists with physical, sensory, or medical disabilities was surveyed to assess their developmental and arts experiences and the effects of those experiences on their personal lives and professional/performing careers. Items assessed included personal demographic data such as place of birth and educational and religious background, involvement with their performing art, support by significant others, experiences during career development, and effects of performing arts involvement on personal development. The sample was located through performing arts organizations and associations for persons with disabilities. Sample members resided in the northeastern, midwestern, and western United States. All of the women felt that their involvement in the performing arts contributed in significant ways to their well-being; however, not all members of the sample were actively engaged in pursuing a performing arts career at the time of the survey.
