A review of literature for music development/education and music therapy with the elderly

Journal/Book: Music Therapy Perspectives. 1988; 5: 33-40.

Abstract: Describes Rett Syndrome, a severe developmental disability found in females, and outlines the 4 stages of the disease and the characteristics typical of each stage. Two case studies of music therapy interventions, with 2 girls (aged 6 yrs 2 mo and 15 yrs 4 mo), are presented, including sample music therapy goals and objectives. The basic goals are (a) to promote appropriate hand usage within structured activities, (b) to improve eye contact and social interaction, (c) to develop simple communicative responses, and (d) to develop basic understanding of cause and effect relationships. Examples of therapeutic strategies using music are also provided. ABSTRACT 2: The purpose of this article is to review slected literature concerning the use of music with elderly persons. In this process, articles tended to fall into one of six categories which included (a) philosophical basis for the use of music with the elderly, (b) description of elderly persons' musical skills and abilities, (c) music therapy treatment results, (d) behavior management in care homes, (e) music and music activity preferences, and (f) suggestions for music activity/therapy programs based in practical experience. Though thereview is not exhaustive, it indicates music is an effective agent in changing responses in elderly persons, and it describes some musical characteristics in the population.
