Abstract: Asserts that music therapy can be a valuable treatment intervention for many communication-related concerns of hearing impaired children, including language development. Treatment requires identification of the strengths and needs of each client, selection of appropriate interventions, and evaluation of progress. Selection of an appropriate assessment tool for measuring language development requires a basic understanding of language problems associated with hearing loss, along with knowledge of appropriate treatment objectives. This article includes (a) an overview of language problems common to children with severe hearing loss, (b) a brief overview of prominent treatment goals and clinical approaches, and (c) selected formal assessment procedures used by the speech/language pathologist and audiologist that provide information relevant to music therapy intervention.
