Abstract: Examines 12 important areas of change in health care (e.g., consumer demographics, health care costs and financing, wellness lifestyles, technology, public ownership of health care companies, ethical decisions). The impact of these changes on music therapists is outlined, and opportunities that music therapists have to improve the status of music therapy in their own clinical settings are delineated. ABSTRACT 2: The American health care industry has experienced many serious changes as a result of the current severe economic crisis. Prosperity of music therapy in this environment requires that music therapists engage in active responses and strategies. The present article examines 12 important areas of change in health care, including consumer demographics, health care costs, and financing, "wellness" lifestyles, technology, private ownership, and ethical decisions. The authors outline 10 areas of concern for music therapists, and delineate opportunities which music therapists have to improve the status of music therapy in their own clinical settings.
