On the unique impact of Richard Strauss's Elektra |
Journal/Book: American Journal of Psychotherapy. 1988; 42: 585-596.
Abstract: Explores the impact of the opera Elektra by R. Strauss (1908), in terms of its portrayal of the oedipal theme and expression of archaic emotions, prelogical thought, and preoedipal concerns. It is contended that the work serves as a warning to clinicians confronted with manifest oedipal material to be sensitive to the diagnostic implications when oedipal material is permeated with more primitive expressions, producing an odd ambience and disquiet in the therapist.
