Abstract: The incidence of neuraminidase in various biological systems as well as the biochemical characterization of this enzym are presented along with the description of the incidence and the biological role of neuraminic acids (sialic acids). The various assay procedures for the determination of neuraminidase activities are discussed in detail.Both pathobiochemical aspects in diseases with a neuraminidase deficiency causing different forms of sialidoses and mucopolysaccharidoses, and the role of neuraminidase in immunological processes are given special consideration.
