Journal/Book: Can Pharm J. 1988; 121: 708-709.
Abstract: The hawthorns are a group of plants capable of producing beneficial effects in the treatment of milder forms of cardiovascular disease such as minor angina pectoris Such effects include a dilation of coronary vasculature and a lowering of arterial blood pressure. The effects appear to be brought about by three chemically dissimilar groups of compounds probably with quite different functions in plants. These include inotropic amines, various types of flavo-noids and triterpenoid saponins. While the therapeutic use of hawthorns is most prevalent in Europe, such application is being found in North America with increasing frequency.
