Abstract: A prospective study should demonstrate the influence of depression on the result of acupuncture treatment which in that capacity already was confirmed as a method of therapy of functional headache by research work.This study refered to patients with 'primary headache" and only one type of headache, the diagnosis according to EKBOM's classification. Besides a contingently existing depression was diagnosed by BeckÂ’s inventory of depression without informing the therapist about this result. Parameter and medication had to be taken down by the patient for one month. Subsequently 10 weeks of acupuncture treatment followed, concerning the points being determined by individual localization of pain including those which were indicated for acupuncture treatment of depression. The patients were charged with follow up self observation 6 months after. 70 Patients of the age between 18 and 65 Years took part. Success of treatment was defined as the quotient of parameter: frequency, intensity and period of pain before, and 4 weeks before termination of therapy.The outcome reckoned by the formula resulted in a success of 85% for non-depressive and 9,5% for depressive patients; the significance of distinction was verified by the Chisquare-test. The issue of this research leads to the conclusion acupuncture definitely being effective on chronical headache, the optimal success excluding the diagnosis of depression. Finally acupuncture can be considered as an appropriate method of treatment.
