Abstract: This paper examines aspects of improvisation "clinically for therapy" and the responsibilities to the client and to the music itself. The critical element is that the therapist should work with a higher level of musical consciousness and an awareness of the way elements of music can be used to build a consistency of experience for the client. Practical suggestions are offered in the area of tonal improvisation, and working within harmonic, melodic, and rhythmic structures that one can then build upon.
