Abstract: This paper examines our interaction with the environment via sounds, and the problems associated with recording sound in the natural environment (i.e. "the quiet countryside"). The intrusion of man made sounds both wittingly and unwittingly exacerbate the problems of the sound recordist. Some experiences with taking sound recordings into the classroom are also discussed. The variety of listening skills from class to class and school to school, and their recognition of strange or familiar sounds, as well as the use of imagination varies greatly.
