Abstract: It is clearly distinguished between a clinical registry and an controlled clinical trial both being considered as tools for treatment comparisons. Any retrospective stratification according to known prognostic factors, however carefully it is carried out, cannot replace the essential feature of controlled clinical trial, the randomization. the main points for this fact are patient selection and confounding factors. One the other hand registries can be efficiently used in an explorative manner to define disease states, to search for prognostic factors determinating the course of a disease and to gain a-priori information for planning clinical trials. For these tasks a well-structured data management and storage is needed. This can be realized by a computer configuration with a database machine as the central element. Last not least the user-friendliness depends on the choice of an appropriate data mode. Because of its simplicity and easy to use logical view on the data, the relational data model was preferred for the registry for urinary tract tumors at the Technical University of Aachen.
