Immunstimulation bei Infektionen der oberen Luftwege und im HNO-Bereich

Journal/Book: Therapiewoche. 1987; 37: 3371-3378.

Abstract: Earlier clinical studies with a Streptococcus product (Symbioflor I) indicated immune stimulation as mode of action. In animal experiments orally administred Streptococcus product significantly enhanced the resistance of mice against challenge with pathogens. Murine neutrophils exhibited increased phagocytic activity upon Streptococcus treatment. Positive results of a recent clinical trial with the bacterial product in treatment of chronic tonsillitis led to the study presented here, including patients with various chronic upper respiratory tract and ENT-infections.In the randomized doubleblind placebo study 106 patients were treated orally for 3 months (53 Symbioflor I, 53 placebo). The total score of clinical findings was decreased by the bacterial product in a total of 88.400, by placebo in 59.7% (p 0.0003). Without symptoms were a total of 67% in the Streptococcus product group and 33% in the placebo group at the end of the study (p 0.0001). Blood and urine Parameters showed no adverse effects, the blood sedimentation rate was significantly decreased by the Streptococcus administration (p 0.0015). Multitest Merieux skintest cellular immunity data demonstrated significantly increased reactivity of 30.7% by the biologic versus 6.6 %by placebo treatment (p 0.0028). Serum immunoglobulines were raised significantly within the Streptococcus group. Differences were significant in IgA and IgM, and apparent in IgG, but not significant. All changes, however, occur within normal immunoglobuline range.
