Music therapy and Depth Psychology in a Private Practice |
Journal/Book: Musiktherapeutische Umschau. 1986; 7: STUTTGART. G. Fischer Verlag. 181-196.
Abstract: The association between music therapy and depth psychology-orientated psychotherapy means that, depending on diagnosis, ther are various therapeutic possibilities which can be adapted to suit the needs of each individual, whereby the main emphasis in therapy can vary considerably. The article reports on examples from the author's private practice as music therapist and depth psychologist (Analytical Psychology) where, in cooperation with various doctors, music therapy is used mainly as a means of relaxation therapy and self-regulation therapy. The author works primarily with the human voice, with breathing and tone, vocal tones, humming and singing, sometimes including the use of the recorder and other instruments. This is mainly neurosis therapy in individual sessions, most clients being adults. The various examples cited make it clear that intervention by means of music therapy can be beneficial when the problems it touches on are not accessible to the spoken word. Such matters may form part of a layer of the unconscious so deep that it calls for elementary, non-verbal communication such as music therapy can offer.
