Abstract: This paper outlines music therapy developments from the hospitals into the community, in the fields of psychiatry, and mental handicap, in Cambridge, UK.It comments briefly on the reduction of beds in psychiatry as a result of patients being rehabilitated into the community, and the music therapy provision in the community. It describes in detail a music therapy group using free improvisation at a Day Clinic for adults suffering from long term mental illness e.g. schizophrenia, manic depression, depression.
