Abstract: Within the framework of a prospective random double-blind study of two groups of thirty patients each, the effectiveness of the secretolytic agent Sinfrontal® in acute and chronic sinusitis was tested against a placebo. All patients received diathermy with inhalation as uniform basic treatment. Patients showing chronic sinusitis received in addition an antibiotic. Six clinical parameters as well as the charecteristics of the secretion were used as criteria for evaluating effectiveness. The active agent had a statistically significant effect on the course of treatment and the severity of the symptoms. In spite of administration of additional antibiotics', the patients with chronic sinusitis had a somewhat slower recovery. However, no conclusion can be drawn about the benefits of antibiotics since the criteria for inclusion in the diagnostic groups varied.
