Music play therapy: An integrated approach |
Journal/Book: Arts in Psychotherapy. 1985; 12: 17-23.
Abstract: Describes nondirective music play therapy, an integration of nondirective play and music therapy. A child plays out his/her feelings on musical instruments that are both structured and unstructured. Ss tire of random explorations, seek to play a specific melody or rhythmic pattern, and may become involved in a shared musical relationship with the therapist. The child voluntarily commits him/herself to a structure at this point. A case study of work with a moderately retarded (IQ 40) 17-yr-old male is detailed, and the clinical possibilities of the approach are demonstrated. (6 ref)
