Abstract: Pain and Treatment of Pain. Physiological and Pathophysiological Mechanisms: The treatment of pain is an urgent medical duty. If curative therapy is impossible, palliative and symptomatic measures must be taken. This paper discusses the peripheral and central nervous mechanisms active in the development and treatment of pain. It is important for the physician to know the basic concepts. For algotherapy to be appropriate, it is decisive whether the pain develops e.g. by the stimulation of pain receptors (receptor pain) or by the direct influence an sensorial nerve fibres (neuropathic pain).
