Abstract: The effects of low doses of alpha partcles (241Am; 10-4Gy) were investigated on cultures of synchronously dividing cells of Physarum polycephalum and an asynchronously growing renal epithelial cell line (MDCK-cells). 241Am leads to a delay of mitosis in Physarum polycephalum. The effect is dose dependent. Further a characteristic delay can be observed upon addition of 241Am at various times during the cell cycle. Doses as low as 10-4 Gy cause a pronounced prolongation of the cell cycle and proliferation respectively for renal epithelial cell cultures.
