The Role of Music in the Treatment and Education of the Autistic Child

Abstract: The paper outlines work with an 8 year-old autistic boy in a hospital chool. The introduction defines the particular appraoch with autistic children and the setting in which therapy takes place before describing a series of sessions with John and the discovery of how he could communicate through music. He was given the opportunity to link his confused inner world with a real situation centred on music. Gradually he was able to assert his own personality through interactive music-making with the therapist.
