Abstract: Presents a psychoanalytic analysis of the writing of Robert Schumann's last work, a composition for piano. The composer is said to have written the work to protect himself against death. The existence of sublimated impulses in Schumann's music is discussed in terms of Freudian psychoanalytic theory.
