Abstract: Telling and writing one's own fairy tales or similar stories - like singing, improvising, making music, painting, modelling or dancing - an expression of man's creative abilities and has since the beginning of time been a means of access to these abilities. Sometines dreams too can inspire the creation of a fairy tale. Fairy tales and dreams are very closely related. Bothhave theri origin in the human soul, in both the soul finds expression in a wide variety of images and events. In psychotherapy the invention of fairy tales can, with those for whom it is suitable, be an act of self-liberation and self-actualisation. It can be an aid to problem-solving and contribute to the clarification of seemingly insoluble questions. So it can be of great significance in the mental healing process. Examples are given here of three fairy-tale-type stories, inspired by dream-impulses, in which music has an important part to play as a force that releases and liberates - and needs itself to be liberated. The stories were written by a middle-aged woman suffering from depression; they are taken from the author's private practice, where she makes combined use of music therapy and depth psychology.
