Abstract: Resistance is a phenomenon occurring frequently in therapy with emotionally disturbed preschool children. This paper outlines the concept of resistance and illustrates its occurrence in work with a 3-year-old boy. The significance of resistance is discussed and the therapist's techniques in meeting the resistance are illustrated. The importance of the origin of an individual's resistance is emphasized. The author concludes by considering questions which must be asked in the development of a theoretical framework for approaching resistance in music therapy sessions.
