The Therapist as Artist |
Journal/Book: Musiktherapeutische Umschau. 1984; 5: STUTTGART. G. Fischer Verlag. 271-287.
Abstract: The article brings out three requirements for artistry in therapy. First of all, the therapist must have achieved professional competence in his/her particular craft (in this case, as a musician). Secondly, s/he must have aquired knowledge and self-experience in the fields of physical, mental and social pathology. thirdly s/he must have experience in the basic qualities of therapeutic dialogue (such as empathic sensibility, patience, warmth, courage, flexibility, tolerance). If these three conditions are met at the right moment - the Greek "kairos" -, then healing can take place; a healing not brought about by therapist or patient making use of a perfect system, but given as a momentary inspiration, made possible by the working of love.
Keyword(s): Professional-competence, therapeutic-dialogue.
