The role of regression in the treatment of depression with an intact ego |
Journal/Book: Pratt Institute Creative Arts Therapy Review. 1984; 5: 17-21.
Abstract: Examined the use of creative arts therapy as a means of fostering regresssion in the service of the ego in a 40-yr-old female hospitalized for depressive symptoms connected to her impending divorce. After many cliched responses to interpretation in group art therapy sessions, S was reached by guided imagery visualization experience for which the suggestion was a childhood scene. She cried but refused comfort from therapist or peers. After early release and a suicide attempt, S was returned to the hospital, angry and isolated. Consistent but minimal invitations brought her back to therapy on the 5th day of rehospitalization. At that time she was able to use clay to explore her primary processes, to take risks, and to be comforted by her peers and therapist. It is suggested that S's regression was manageable in the context of creative arts therapy and that this process can facilitate growth through delight. (11 ref)
