Abstract: The extensive range of factual literature is evaluated critically, and the obvious advantages of vegetarian nutrition are highlighted, whereas at the same time certain reservations with regard to a pure vegetarian diet are discussed. The authors also report an own preliminary investigations involving 123 vegetarians examined according to the "matched-pair" process. More favourable data are found among vegetarians than among the controls for the following parameters: blood pressure, body weight, incidence rate of disease, smoking and drinking habits, cholesterol, HDL/cholesterol, triglycerides, uric acid, creatinine, and other data. The data for albumin, haemoglobin, serum iron, and iron binding capacity were not lower - or only negligibly so -than those of the controls. These assessments are being continued, and the study will be extended to cover a larger number of volunteers.
