Abstract: Examines 3 facets of the discipline of music therapy: theory, clinical practice, and research. It is contended that theory is needed to provide an organized basis for both research and clinical practice. Clinical practice profits by resting on a more solid base and by being validated through research. It is suggested that music therapy will benefit when the roles of theoretician, clinician, and researcher are integrated and when music therapists are encouraged to act in all 3 capacities. (2 ref)
