Abstract: Examined the effects of a music participation program on selected concerns and attitudes of 20 residents (aged 60-95 yrs) of a nursing home, who were compared to 23 age-matched residents of another nursing home who received no music program. The treatment for the experimental group consisted of 2 45-min music sessions per week for 5 wks. Music sessions included a variety of musical activities, the goals of which were to teach Ss to sing familiar songs, learn simple accompaniment patterns to the songs, learn to use rhythm instruments for sound effects and/or accompaniment, and learn to follow directions to perform these activities. Results of pre- and posttests show that the following variables were significantly improved in the experimental group: life satisfaction, music attitude, and self-concept in music. It is contended that music should be used as an integral aspect of daily activity for the elderly. Recommendations are made for implementing similar music programs in all geriatric institutions.
