Abstract: Describes the experimental design of a study in which 12 profoundly retarded adults received music therapy and play sessions for 6 mo each in a counterbalanced order. Therapy was directed at achieving basic improvements such as increased eye contact, vocalization, and participation. Analysis will involve examination of videotapes recording the occurrence of behaviors indicative of the achievement of aims identified for each S at the beginning of the study.
